해외 촛불행동 시국 선언문

우리 재외 동포들은 몸은 비록 타국에서 살고 있지만 우리의 조국 대한민국을 늘 마음에 품고 살아가고 있다. 우리는 일제 강점기 때 조국의 독립과 해방을 위해, 군부 독재 정권을 몰아내기 위해, 그리고 민주주의와 평화통일을 위해, 해외에서도 함께 투쟁했던 역사를 자랑스럽게 생각한다. 그런데, 독립운동가들과 애국선열들의 희생으로 일구어

놓은 대한민국의 민주주의와 국격을 윤석열 정부는 단숨에 추락시키고 있다. 세계 선진 반열에 올랐던 대한민국이 언론 탄압, 민주주의 퇴보, 전쟁 위기, 외교 참사, 민생 파탄, 그리고 사상 최악의 500억 달러에 육박하는 무역적자로 인한 경제 파탄 등으로 전 세계 많은 사람이 부러워하던 나라에서 하루아침에 국제적으로 웃음거리가 되는 나라로 전락하고 있으니 참으로 개탄스럽고 조국의 앞날이 심히 걱정된다.

우리는 전 검찰총장 윤석열이 지난 대선에서 0.73% 차이로 당선될 때 범죄자 취조만 해봤지 정치와 행정 경험이 전무한 대통령에 대한 우려가 컸지만, 대한민국을 위해서 윤석열 정권이 잘 되기를 진심으로 바라는 마음이 간절했다. 그러나, 취임한 지 채 일 년도 안 된 지금 우리의 조국 대한민국에서 들려오는 소식은 참담하고도 부끄러운 소식뿐이다. 대통령과 영부인이 해외에 나갈 때마다 매번 낯부끄러운 외교 참사가 일어나고, 지난해 10 월에는 서울 한 복판을 걷다가 꽃다운 젊은이 159 명이 압사당하는 어처구니없는 일도 발생했다. “국가는 국민의 생명과 재산을 보호해야 할 책임이 있다”고

대한민국 헌법은 명시하고 있다. 하지만 국민들의 살려달라는 소리는 외면한 채 국민의 안전을 지켜야 할 정부와 여당은 오히려 변명과 회피로 일관하고 있으며 희생자들과 유가족들에게 망언을 쏟아내는 등 2차 가해도 서슴지 않고 있다.

또한 윤석열 대통령 후보 시절 뒤에서 조용히 내조만 하겠다고 기자회견까지 했던 김건희 여사는 누가 대통령인지 모를 정도로 국정 전면에 나서고 있다. 그뿐만 아니라, 멀쩡한 청와대를 놔두고 1 조가 넘는 천문학적인 혈세를 쏟아부어 가며 대통령 집무실을 용산으로 급히 옮기느라 그로 인해 계속해서 많은 문제가 발생하고 급기야는 ‘천공’이라는 사이비 종교 교주가 이에 개입되었다는 국방부 관계자의 폭로가 나오고 있다.

우리는 이러한 대한민국의 현 시국을 더 이상 지켜보고만 있을 수 없어 무너진 민주주의를 되살리고 평화의 한반도, 국민의 주권 회복을 위해 다시 촛불을 들고자 한다. 

빼앗긴 나라를 되찾기 위해 목숨을 걸고 우리 민족의 독립 의지를 전 세계에 천명한

‘2.8 독립선언’과 ‘3.1 운동’의 정신을 이어받아, 우리는 결연한 마음으로 다시 촛불을 들어 2017 년 미완의 촛불 혁명을 완수할 것이다.

우리 재외동포 민주 시민들은 윤석열 정부와 국회, 그리고 사법부에 다음을 천명한다.

1. 윤석열 정부는 ‘10.29 이태원 참사’로 희생된 159 명의 희생자와 유가족들에게 즉각 사과하고 철저한 진상 규명과 책임자 처벌을 조속히 실행하라!

2. 주가조작으로 자본시장을 유린하고 논문 표절, 학력과 경력 위조 등 온갖 거짓으로 일관하고 있는 ‘김건희 특검법’을 제정하여 명명백백하게 성역 없이 수사하라!

3. 무능하고 무지한 윤석열은 더 이상 대한민국을 망치지 말고 퇴진하라!

A Statement on the Emergency Situation in South Korea by the Overseas Candlelight Action

Though we live outside of our homeland, we live always with Korea near to our hearts. We are proud of the history of overseas Koreans supporting the fight for Korean independence during the Japanese colonial rule, against military dictatorships, and for democratization and peaceful reunification of Korea.

The current Yoon Suk-yeol government is downgrading South Korea's national stature. It is disheartening to witness South Korea becoming an international laughing stock as press suppression, regression of democracy, specter of war, diplomatic blunders have increased during his administration thus far and have tainted South Korea's image as an advanced nation on a global stage.

When former prosecutor general Yoon won the presidency with 0.73% difference, we were worried about his inexperience in politics and governance but wished that the Yoon government would do well.

But, less than one year into his presidency, the news from our homeland is dire. We hear about constant diplomatic blunders whenever the first couple goes on overseas visits. And, last October, 159 young people lost their lives in the heart of Seoul in an absurd disaster at Itaewon. Though the South Korean constitution states that "the government has responsibility to protect citizen’s lives and properties," the government and the ruling party did not truly console families of victims, but turned to excuses and evasions to avoid responsibilities.

The first lady Kim Keon-hee, though she promised during the campaign to stay low key if Yoon got elected, has now come in front and center of national governance. It is said that she was involved with the hasty decision to relocate the presidential office from the Blue House to Yongsan, costing an

astronomical cost to taxpayers (with news of pseudo religious leader being involved in this matter).

We cannot just stay idle while these worrisome developments are happening in our homeland. Therefore, we will be raising candlelight -- again -- and finish the unfinished Candlelight Revolution of 2017 in order to recover democracy and citizen sovereignty, and foster peace in the Korean Peninsula.

We declare and demand the following to the Yoon Government, the National Assembly, and the Judiciary of South Korea:

1. The Yoon Government should immediately apologize to the victims and families of the Itaewon Disaster, along with thorough investigations of truth and prosecution of responsible parties.

2. Fully investigate allegations on Kim Keon-hee of stock manipulations, plagiarisms, and fabrication of resumes by enacting the "Kim Keon-hee Special Prosecution Law."

3. The immediate resignation of Yoon Suk-yeol. February 20, 2023
